The results of this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations were published Monday with overall pass percentage of 86.37, which is 4.06 percent higher than last year’s. So, it seems that the results of this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations have broken all records with 86.37 percent success rate.
Last year, the pass percentage was 82.31 with a total of students having passed out successfully.
Among the eight general boards, Sylhet board topped the list in pass percentage, showing 91.78 percent success. Dhaka Board posted 85.95 percent pass, Jessore 87.16, Comilla 85.64, Rajshahi 88.33, Barisal 86.96, Chittagong 78.96 and Dinajpur 87.16.
A total of 14, 20, 057 students are appearing in the exams from 26, 855 schools at 2,364 centers across the country.
Of them, 10, 52, 969 students are appearing in SSC exams from 15,933 schools at 1,278 centers across the country while 2, 74,930 students are sitting for Dakhil and rest for SSC (Vocational).
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid handed over the SSC result books to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.
Later, he will announce the results at noon from a press conference at his office.

A record success rate (86.32 per cent) in this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams, under eight general education boards, has given students, their parents and teachers something to cheer about. Last year, it was 82.16 per cent. The number of students scoring the Grade Point Average (GPA) 5 has also increased significantly this year.
The combined pass rate of all 10 education boards, including Dakhil exams under the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board and SSC (vocational) exams under the Bangladesh Technical Education Board, is 86.37 per cent, 4.06 per cent higher than last year. As many as 14,12,379 students sat for the exams held between February 1 and March 15. Of them, 12,19,894 are successful.

When asked, Bangladesh education minister Nurul Islam Nahid attributed the success to the trend of securing good marks in English and mathematics. “In more than 4,000 schools and madrasas, additional classes in English and mathematics were arranged for weaker students under an education ministry project. Besides, introduction of creative questions instead of the essay-type ones also had a positive impact,” he added.
The minister formally announced the SSC results 2012 at a press conference at about 1 pm. Before that, in the morning, he handed over a summary of the SSC results to Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina at Ganabhaban.
In her reaction, Sheikh Hasina said such excellent SSC results should continue in future.

Under eight general education boards in Bangladesh, 65,252 examinees have achieved the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) 5, compared to 62,788 last year. The grade system was introduced in 2001, when only 76 examinees got GPA-5. A total of 10,48,144 SSC examinees wrote the exams this year. Of them, 9,04,756 have passed the tests. In 2011, the SSC success rate was 82.16 per cent and it was 78.19 per cent in 2010, compared to 67.41 per cent in 2009.
The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Sylhet, was top among eight general education boards, with a success rate of 91.78 per cent, while the Chittagong board remained at the bottom with 78.96 per cent. A total of 2,611 students got GPA-5 under the Sylhet board,  vis-a-vis 5,121 from the Chittagong board.

As many as 25,629 students secured the GPA-5 grade from the Dhaka board. It has a success rate of 85.95 per cent.
Under the Rajshahi board, the percentage of success was 88.33 per cent, with 10,726 students securing the GPA-5 grade. Under the Jessore board, it was 87.16 per cent, with 5,825 examinees getting the GPA-5 grade. The Dinajpur board’s success rate stood at 87.16 per cent, with 7,431 students getting GPA-5.
The Barisal board’s success rate was 86.96 per cent, with 2,730 students securing the GPA-5 grade. Under the Comilla board, it was 85.64 per cent, while 5,179 students scored the GPA-5 grade.
This year, the examinees had to answer objective type questions in 21 subjects, while the system was introduced for two subjects in 2010. The humanities students’ success rate was 81.26 per cent, while it was 94.48 per cent for students belonging to the science stream, compared to 87.39 per cent of the business studies group.
The percentage of success of Dakhil examinees also rose significantly this year. The success rate was 88.47 per cent, while it was 83.23 per cent last year. The number of GPA-5 achievers was 13,436, while it was 12,756 last year. Dakhil students under the Madrasa Board faced tests in English and Bangla, bearing a total of 200 marks, while SSC students, under eight general education boards, faced 400 marks in Bangla and English.
The pass percentage of SSC (vocational) students under the Technical Education Board saw a slight decline. The rate this year was 80.69 per cent, compared to 81.37 per cent last year. However, the number of GPA-5 achievers significantly rose to 3,524  from last year’s 1,205. Usually drop-outs, irregulars and over-aged students are enrolled under this board.
Under the Dhaka board, the Rajuk Uttara Model College secured the first position for the third consecutive year among the list of top 20 institutions. The Shamsul Hoque Khan School, Demra, was second, while the Motijheel Ideal School and College and the Viqarunnisa Noon School ranked third and fourth, respectively.
